Behavior, Attitude, Responsibility, Kindness (BARK)

At Tom Hawkins Elementary School, the safety of our students is our highest priority. In order to maintain a safe campus where students are learning to engage with others in a respectful and responsible fashion, we have high expectations for behavior. Walkways

On the walkways, students are expected to:

  • Keep hands and feet to self.
  • Walk forward on walkways.
  • Walk around yellow door zones.
  • Engage in positive interactions with others.
  • Use walkways.
  • Use quiet voices.
  • Go directly to destination and back in a timely manner.
  • Step aside to allow others to pass.
  • Use kind words.

Cafeteria

In the cafeteria, students are expected to:

  • Keep hands and feet to self.
  • Eat your food only.
  • Ask permission to leave the table.
  • Use an indoor voice.
  • Use good manners.
  • Be polite.
  • Participate in cleaning up.
  • Walk to line up.
  • Be welcoming.
  • Show respect to all staff.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, students are expected to:

  • Go, flush, wash, and leave.
  • Keep floors and walls clean and dry.
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap.
  • Return to learning quickly.
  • Maintain a clean space.
  • Put towels in the garbage.
  • Flush toilets.
  • Leave non-bathroom items outside the bathroom.
  • Keep eyes and hands to self.
  • Respect privacy.
  • Use quiet voices.

Classroom

In the classroom, students are expected to:

  • Enter and exit respectfully.
  • Follow teacher directions.
  • Use your materials only.
  • Be a positive learner.
  • Be an active listener.
  • Work cooperatively.
  • Follow safety protocols.
  • Be on time.
  • Be ready to learn.
  • Use an inside voice.
  • Use polite language.
  • Respect others’ right to learn.

Playground

On the playground, students are expected to:

  • Stop at the bell or whistle.
  • Play games in designated areas and follow playground rules.
  • Put away all equipment and walk directly to class when released.
  • Be a good sport.
  • Walk, talk, or rock when there is a conflict.
  • Use polite language.
  • Stay within yellow lines.
  • Use equipment as intended and return it.
  • Pick up all trash.
  • Keep cell phones turned off in backpacks from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Follow game rules.
  • Walk around games in progress.
  • Everyone who wants to play gets to play.

Office

In the office, students are expected to:

  • Follow adult directions.
  • Wait patiently and quietly.
  • Respect the workspace of others.
  • Ask permission to use the phone.
  • Walk directly to and from the office.
  • Keep cell phones turned off in backpacks from 7:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • State purpose politely.
  • Ask for help without interrupting.

Arrival and Dismissal

At arrival and dismissal, students are expected to:

  • Walk directly to your destination.
  • Use crosswalks.
  • Stay on walkways.
  • Wait calmly.
  • Follow school rules.
  • Follow safety protocols.
  • Arrive at the designated time and gate.
  • Know your pickup plan.
  • Be courteous when passing other people.
  • Follow adult directions.

Technology

When using technology, students are expected to:

  • Use the device for the assigned task only.
  • Have the device charged.
  • Follow the technology agreement.
  • Handle the device with care.
  • Communicate for academic purposes only.
  • Report damage to the device immediately.
  • Interact and collaborate respectfully.

In the library, students are expected to:

  • Use a whisper voice.
  • Keep hands and feet to self.
  • Stay on task.
  • Respect the library as a learning space.
  • Follow safety protocols.
  • Return books on time.
  • Use your shelf marker to keep books in the proper place.
  • Push in chairs.
  • Remove hats and hoods upon entering.
  • Use polite words.
  • Treat books with care.
